Common Noun: A noun is a word used to identify a person, animal, place, or thing. Nouns are generally divided into two main categories: proper nouns and common nouns. Proper nouns designate a specific entity, whereas a common noun refers to a general class of entities rather than specific individuals. For example, if you look around your room, items like a TV, chair, pen, curtain, or bottle are all common nouns. Essentially, all nouns name something, but proper nouns label them specifically, while common nouns refer to categories or groups.

Common Noun Definition 

A common noun refers to a broad group of similar things, including people, places, animals, or objects. It is a noun that serves as a non-specific identifier. Common nouns are generally not capitalized unless they appear at the beginning of a sentence or within a title. They can represent concrete objects, abstract concepts, or collective groups. 

For Example- 'Dog' is a common noun referring to a species. However, if you name a specific dog 'Tommy,' that name becomes a proper noun. Therefore, 'dog' is a general label for the animal group, while 'Tommy' identifies one individual.

Common Noun is Written in Lowered Case

Unlike proper nouns, common nouns are typically written in lowercase. However, there are two primary exceptions to this rule:

1. If a common noun appears as the first word in a sentence, it is written in a capital letter.

               For example: 'Countries must look after their citizens.'  

Here, the common noun Countries is capitalized because it begins the sentence, while citizens remains lowercase as it follows standard grammar rules.

       2. If a common noun appears in a title, it is capitalized as part of the header or title styling.

For example: 'Fifteen Dogs by Andre Alexis.' 

In this instance, 'Dogs' is a common noun, but it is capitalized because it is part of the book's official title.

Examples of a Common Noun Used in Sentences

Let's examine how common nouns differ from proper nouns. Remember that capitalization rules apply when these words appear at the start of a sentence or within a formal title.

1. A girl rang the doorbell and ran away. (Girl is a general word, which is mentioned in common, hence it is the common noun).
2. He likes to hike in the mountains. (As there are so many mountains by name, in this sentence it is a common noun)
3. My sister and her friend plan a trip to Manali. (Friend is a common noun, that is not mentioned specifically by name)
4. I bought this dress yesterday from a mall. (The dress type or colour is not mentioned, so dress is the common noun)
5. My favourite colour is Red. (Colour is a general word, which is a common noun).
6. I want to live in this city.
7. Where is my bike?
8. We all live on a planet in the solar system.
9. I have ordered biryani from a restaurant.
