On 9th May 2026, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal, becoming the first-ever leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold the office in the state.

The ceremonial oath-taking was held at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, and various NDA Chief Ministers. Governor R.N. Ravi formally administered the oath of office and secrecy to Chief Minister Adhikari and his cabinet colleagues.

West Bengal New Chief Minister: Suvendu Adhikari

Born on 15 December 1970 in Karkuli, Purba Medinipur, Suvendu Adhikari is the state's 9th Chief Minister and the first from the BJP. His appointment is particularly significant, as he is the first Chief Minister from Bengal’s rural district belt in 55 years, succeeding Ajoy Mukherjee who held the post in 1971.

Adhikari stems from a distinguished political lineage; his father, Sisir Adhikari, served as a Member of Parliament for Kanthi and as a Union Minister of State. An alumnus of Rabindra Bharati University, the Chief Minister holds a Master of Arts degree, earned in 2011.
