Scientific Names of Animals and Plants: In biological taxonomy, the scientific name is a two-part system comprised of the genus and species. The genus identifies the group to which an organism belongs, while the species provides a specific classification for that organism. This formal method, known as binomial nomenclature, provides a standardized naming convention used by scientists worldwide. In this article, we explore the scientific names of animals and plants in greater detail.

What is Scientific Nomenclature?

There are millions of species across the globe known by various local or common names. Because these regional names fluctuate across borders and languages, they often cause significant confusion within the scientific community. To ensure global consistency, scientists utilize a formal process called nomenclature. By assigning a unique, standardized name to every living organism—often referred to as binomial nomenclature—researchers can accurately communicate and document biological diversity without ambiguity.

For example, the scientific name for the common mango is Mangifera indica. In this designation, Mangifera represents the genus, while indica serves as the specific species name.

Who is the father of Scientific Nomenclature?

This formal system of classification was pioneered by the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus and remains the global standard today. He first introduced the concept of binomial nomenclature in his seminal 1753 work, ‘Species Plantarum,’ later refining the system in his 1758 publication, Systema Naturae.

How to Write Scientific Names?

To facilitate easier scientific study, experts have established rigorous procedures for assigning unique names to every known organism. Biologists globally adhere to an international code of nomenclature, which ensures that every species maintains a distinct identity and a universally recognized designation, as outlined below:

  • For plants, scientific names are based on agreed principles and criteria, which are detailed in International Code for Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).
  • For Animals, Scientific names based upon the principle of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) have evolved.

Universal Rules of Nomenclature

The universal rules of biological nomenclature are as follows:

  1. Biological names are generally in Latin and usually written in italics.
  2. The first word in a biological name is the genus while the second component denotes the species name.
  3. Both the words in a biological name, when handwritten should be underlined separately or printed in italics to indicate their Latin origin.
  4. The first word representing the genus starts with a capital letter while the species name starts with a small letter. It can be illustrated with the example of Mangifera indica. (Scientific name of Mango)
