Following the detection of the Omicron variant, authorities have urged calm and vigilance. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has emphasized the importance of social distancing and consistent mask usage to curb transmission. Expert projections from IIT scientist Manindra Agarwal suggested that while a third wave could peak by February, it would likely be milder than the second wave, with estimated daily cases ranging between 1-1.5 lakh.

States across India have intensified vaccination drives, surveillance, and containment strategies. The Tamil Nadu government has launched door-to-door vaccination campaigns, while Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai confirmed the state's readiness to manage the variant. Nationally, the Centre has implemented stringent screening protocols for international arrivals at airports to minimize the risk of imported cases.

What is Omicron?

The variant features over 30 mutations in the spike protein, which is the primary component used by the virus to infect host cells and the main target for the body’s immune system.

Omicron Symptoms

To date, there are no reports of unusual or severe clinical outcomes associated with the Omicron variant. Patients who tested positive have primarily exhibited mild symptoms, including sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.
