Following the detection of the Omicron variant, authorities have urged calm and vigilance. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has emphasized the importance of social distancing and consistent mask usage to curb transmission. Expert projections from IIT scientist Manindra Agarwal suggested that while a third wave could peak by February, it would likely be milder than the second wave, with estimated daily cases ranging between 1-1.5 lakh.
States across India have intensified vaccination drives, surveillance, and containment strategies. The Tamil Nadu government has launched door-to-door vaccination campaigns, while Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai confirmed the state's readiness to manage the variant. Nationally, the Centre has implemented stringent screening protocols for international arrivals at airports to minimize the risk of imported cases.
What is Omicron?
First reported to the WHO on November 24, 2021, by South Africa, the Omicron variant is a rapidly spreading strain of SARS-CoV-2. Classified as a "variant of concern," it is named after the fifteenth letter of the Greek alphabet. The variant features over 30 mutations in the spike protein, which is the primary component used by the virus to infect host cells and the main target for the body’s immune system.
Omicron Symptoms
To date, there are no reports of unusual or severe clinical outcomes associated with the Omicron variant. Patients who tested positive have primarily exhibited mild symptoms, including sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.
Omicron Cases in India- FAQs
Given its rapid spread, the WHO designated Omicron as a "variant of concern." Its aggressive nature was highlighted by the surge in South Africa, which recorded 8,561 cases on December 1, up significantly from 3,402 on November 26.
Scientists and the WHO have not yet issued a definitive statement comparing the severity of Omicron to the Delta variant. Currently, observed infections remain mild, and it is too early to determine if the variant poses a greater threat than its predecessors.
Public health experts remain optimistic that existing vaccines will continue to provide significant protection against severe illness caused by the Omicron variant.
As of January 27, 2022, India had recorded 21.05 lakh active cases associated with the Omicron surge.
