What is JoSAA Counselling 2026?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is the centralized admission body established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Through JoSAA, eligible students secure admission to prestigious undergraduate engineering programs (B.E./B.Tech) across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) nationwide.

JoSAA Counselling 2026 Overview

Participation in the counselling process is open to candidates who qualified for JEE Main 2026 and/or JEE Advanced 2026. While JEE Advanced ranks determine admission into IITs and IISc, JEE Main ranks are the primary criteria for seat allocation at NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur, and other GFTIs.

What is the Eligibility Criteria?

  1. Admission to NITs, IIITs, IIEST and GFTIs requires a valid JEE Main 2026 rank.
  2. For admission to IITs and IISc, a valid JEE Advanced 2026 rank is mandatory.
  3. Should have passed 12th (10+2) or equivalent with physics, chemistry and mathematics.
  4. Must have secured at least 75% marks in Class 12 (or 65% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) or be in the top 20 percentile in their board.
  5. Candidates appearing in Class 12 in 2026 can appear provisionally also.

How to Register & Fill Choices?– Step by Step

  1. Visit the official portal of JoSAA at josaa.nic.in and click on “New Candidate Registration”.
  2. Login using your JEE Main application number and password (or JEE Advanced credentials if you’re applying for IITs).
  3. Use the OTP sent to your registered mobile number to verify your identity. Check your personal details, category and rank in the screen.
  4. Select your preferred institute-course combinations with the ‘Add’ button and set the preference order.
  5. You can edit and move around your choices as many times as you want before the deadline. save your list after each session
  6. Lock your choices by 5 PM on June 11. If you don’t lock it manually, the system will automatically lock your last saved order.
  7. Upload required documents and pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) in advance to avoid any last minute problems after seat allotment.

FAQs

Can I register for JoSAA in later rounds?

No. The JoSAA registration and choice-filling portal is available exclusively from June 2 to June 11. Once this window expires, students will not be permitted to register or update their preferences in later rounds of the counselling process.

How many rounds of seat allotment will JoSAA 2026 have?

JoSAA 2026 consists of five rounds of seat allocation. The fifth and final round for IITs and IISc is set for July 21, 2026. Following the conclusion of these rounds, any remaining vacant seats are typically filled through a separate CSAB special round of counselling.

Is JoSAA registration free?

There is no registration fee to participate in JoSAA counselling. However, upon receiving a seat allotment, candidates are required to pay a Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) of ₹30,000 for General category candidates or ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates to confirm their admission.
